The Healthy Communities Initiative’s Move More Eat Healthy (MMEH) campaign would like to celebrate the success of resident leader Brenda Torres, who recently appeared as a guest on “La Voz de tus Recuerdos,” a weekly Facebook live show hosted by Elisa Castañeda. Brenda Torres is a resident leader from the City of Buena Park and is the second member of the Buena Park community to be invited to guest star in the show. She is a member of the Resident Leadership Academy (RLA), English Learner Advisory Committee (ELAC), and District English Learner Advisory Committee (DELAC) committees in the Buena Park School District and Fullerton Joint-Union High School District.
During the talk show, Brenda shared about her experiences being involved with parent leadership committees and provided brief overviews of the various kinds of groups that exist. She also talked about how families and parents can engage in the education of their children and the importance of doing so. This is significant because Brenda had the opportunity to share all about her years of experience to the thousands of viewers of the show, potentially convincing some to integrate themselves into their children’s education. The biggest takeaway from her presentation was that parents must continue to empower themselves to best advocate for their children’s education interests.
Brenda has worked tirelessly to support Community Action Partnership of Orange County (CAP OC) during the past several years. Since the inception of MMEH, Brenda has worked as a volunteer resident leader to advance and support all efforts of CAP OC and MMEH. Her work began with the Community Building Initiative grant and continues today.
