Back-to-School Supply Drive
2010 to 2011

Proceeds to benefit school children ( Grades K-12 ) in Orange County.

Education matters. A backpack full of school supplies provides a
window of opportunity that leads to educational success in the life of a child
- it marks the beginning of a new school year and a fresh start full of hope. It is estimated that up to 78% of our students start the school year with no or inadequate school supplies, putting the student and the teacher at a disadvantage from the very first day of school.

For many inner-city children, going to the first day of class with a new backpack filled with new supplies just isn’t possible. Their families have been impacted by the nation’s failing economy, experiencing wage cuts or even job losses. Buying even the basic necessities is difficult, with some parents having to choose between feeding their children and ensuring their preparedness for school.

Community Action Partnership of Orange County, along with many community partners and volunteers, organized, gathered and filled new backpacks with grade-appropriate school supplies and healthy snacks. 2010 donors include Disney Worldwide, Dhont Family Foundation and Allergan Foundation. Other 2010 donors and volunteers included the Orange County Bar Association, Disney VoluntEARs, and Brownie Troop 1208. Over 5,500 backpacks were given to the Anaheim Family YMCA, South Coast Children’s Society, City of Anaheim, City of Placentia, Anaheim Independencia and El Modena Family Resource Centers to distribute to local low-income youth.

“It’s a financial relief for the parents who sometimes have as many as five children. And the kids really look forward to getting them to start a new school year. It means a lot to these kids that they can start school with a new backpack. The backpacks are so appreciated – they’re a big blessing.”
--2010 B4S! Recipient.

About the Backpacks for Success Food Program:

  • Backpacks are discreetly distributed to children on the last day before the weekend or holiday vacation

The Concept
The concept was developed when we noted that school nurses asked for help because hungry students were coming to her with stomach aches and dizziness. Working with our Orange County Food Bank we will provide the school children with groceries in non-descript backpacks to carry home. In addition to providing nutritious food to school children in need, if we will provide extra food for younger siblings at home and others operate during the summer months when children are out of school and have limited access to free or reduced-priced meals.
